- What makes a hotel five-star in Barcelona?
- Five-star is a legal classification set by Catalonia's tourism decree (Decret 75/2020), not a review score. To qualify, a hotel must meet that category's minimum requirements, which include: double rooms of at least 16 m² with an en-suite bathroom (most at least 5 m²); at least 5% of rooms as suites; 24-hour room service including food; a bar and restaurant service; air-conditioning in the rooms and common areas; and in-room provisions such as a minibar, safe, hairdryer, international TV channels and a turndown service. A hotel that falls slightly short on room sizes — in up to 20% of its rooms — can still reach the category through the decree's quality-points system, by offering extra services such as a pool, spa or gym.
- What is the difference between 5★ GL, 5★, 4★ Superior, and 4★?
- They are rungs on the same regulatory ladder (Decret 75/2020), each requiring more than the one below. The minimum double-room size steps up at every level: 15 m² at four-star, 15.5 m² at four-star Superior, 16 m² at five-star and 16.5 m² at Gran Luxe. Room service runs 12 hours at four-star and four-star Superior but must be 24 hours at five-star and Gran Luxe, and only five-star and GL are required to offer suites. Four-star Superior adds over standard four-star an on-site bar, minibar, hairdryer, international TV channels and turndown service. Gran Luxe is the top tier and uniquely requires the most hands-on service — a doorman and bellhop, a parking service, an on-site beauty and hair salon, and bathrobes and slippers in the rooms.
