Estación de Madrid Atocha

Madrid's Atocha railway station on Plaza del Emperador Carlos V opened as the city's first railway station in 1851. After the original building burned down, a new iron-and-glass train shed was built in 1892 to a design by Alberto de Palacio Elissague with Gustave Eiffel, its inverted-hull roof rising about 27 metres. A 1985 remodelling by architect Rafael Moneo converted the old concourse into a 4,000-square-metre covered tropical garden, while a new terminal handles today's trains.
