Background

About Bodega Los Secretos

The Story

Bodega Los Secretos occupies what it says is the oldest wine cellar in central Madrid. The first gallery was dug in the early 17th century to age the local wine at a steady temperature, and monks of the San Felipe Neri order later extended it into a cloister-like maze of niches, domes and arches. Hidden for more than 400 years, it was carefully restored, down to sealing more than eight kilometres of brick joints, and turned into a restaurant.

The Cuisine

The kitchen serves avant-garde Mediterranean cooking, with cocktails, in a space designed for long, private evenings and celebrations.

The Carta

The house aims to please both classic and modern tastes. Starters include citrus-scented grilled scallops, aubergine tempura with piquillo hummus, a tomato salad with ventresca, 'huevos cabreados' with a spicy smoked Iberian sauce, a Japanese and Mexican duo of bonito tartare, hand-cut Iberian ham and croquetas of ham or squid in its ink. There are rice and pasta dishes, from a creamy rice of prawn, line-caught squid and octopus to boletus risotto, then fish such as Guetaria bonito tataki, corvina in a 'Dominican' coconut sauce and confit cod with pear alioli, and meats from a beef tenderloin with wild mushrooms (€27) to a dry-aged Iruki entrecôte (€33) and duck confit glazed with Malvasía. Bread and aperitivo are €2.50.

Menu Boutique and Gourmet Afternoons

Monday to Thursday, while stocks last, the Menu Boutique (€52 per person, whole table, up to six) runs through eight of the most representative dishes, from squid-ink croquetas and grilled octopus with truffled potato to butterfish with lime and Iberian tenderloin in port, with an optional four-wine pairing for €18. Between lunch and dinner, from 15:30 to 19:30, the cellar serves a separate 'tardes gourmet' carta.

Getting There

It's on Calle de San Blas, just off Calle de Atocha in the Cortes area of Madrid's Centro district, in the museum quarter near the Prado and Reina Sofia.

Nearby

Cortes sits between the parliament and the museums, so the pavements carry politicians, visitors and locals in roughly equal measure. The eating covers everything from cocktail rooms to serious kitchens, often behind doors that give nothing away. Congreso de los Diputados and Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza bookend it.
