Background

About La Malontina

The Story

La Malontina sits on Calle de la Verónica in the Barrio de las Letras, a small room its own site says was refreshed for its 21st year, with founder and executive chef Pablo Fernández Acera at the helm.

The Cuisine

The cooking is contemporary and local at its base, honest and slow, with influences from other latitudes and built on proximity produce. For its 21st anniversary the chef added dishes that nod to neighbouring establishments in the barrio.

Neighbours on the Menu

For its 21st year the restaurant added a 'Menú Barrio de las Letras' paying homage to the dishes and produce of its neighbours: a gilda inspired by the one at the Los Gatos beer hall, a tomato tartare after a recipe by Erlantz Gorostiza, and fresh pasta with carabinero, the recipe Tati served at La Vaca Verónica, the restaurant that occupied this same address in the 1980s (€38). The wine list is chosen with neighbours and suppliers Bodegas Trigo.

The Carta

Openers include a pineapple-and-cava cocktail called Pato Frío, a cheese, hazelnut and foie mi-cuit puff pastry (only twenty made a day) and the Bomba Malontina, a potato bomba with a brisket heart. Then Iberian 'chili crab' made with crisp pig's ear, Pacific scallops with kimchi and Godello, ham croquetas, octopus ensaladilla and caramelised cabbage with anchovy vinaigrette; duck confit lasagne with 24-month Comté, a creamy Asturian rice with chorizo and Cabrales (the chef's homage to his homeland), lacquered sweetbreads and slow-cooked brisket. There are short and long tasting menus and off-menu seasonal dishes.

Practicalities

Open every day: 12:30 to 22:30 Monday to Thursday, to 23:00 Friday and Saturday, and 13:30 to 22:00 on Sunday. Bread is organic sourdough from Panic with house butter. Book online or call 914 20 31 08.

Getting There

On Calle de la Verónica in the Barrio de las Letras, the Cortes area of Madrid's Centro district and the city's old literary quarter.

Nearby

Cortes sits between the parliament and the museums, so the pavements carry politicians, visitors and locals in roughly equal measure. The eating covers everything from cocktail rooms to serious kitchens, often behind doors that give nothing away. Congreso de los Diputados and Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza bookend it.
