Real Jardín Botánico

The Real Jardín Botánico was founded in 1755 by King Ferdinand VI, initially with over 2,000 plants collected by botanist José Quer y Martínez. In 1774 King Charles III ordered it moved to its current 8-hectare site on Plaza de Murillo next to the Prado, which opened in 1781. It now holds around 90,000 plants and 1,500 trees across seven outdoor sections and five greenhouses, and its herbarium, the largest in Spain, contains over a million specimens.
