Puerta del Sol

Puerta del Sol is a public square in Madrid's Centro district, originating as a 15th-century city gate named for its eastern orientation toward the rising sun. Since 1857 it has marked Kilometre Zero, the symbolic centre of Spain's radial road network. Its clock is broadcast nationally each New Year's Eve for the tradition of eating twelve grapes, and the square is home to the Statue of the Bear and the Strawberry Tree, Madrid's heraldic symbol. It was pedestrianized in 2020.
