The Story

MACAO opened on Calle del Príncipe in May 2018, the first restaurant of the MACAO group, in the middle of central Madrid near Puerta del Sol.

The Cuisine

The kitchen reinterprets the classic Madrid tapeo through the flavours of Chinese and Asian cooking, pitched as a fusion of madrileña and Asian gastronomy.

The XS format

Plates come small, tapas-style: siu mai of Iberian secreto with seasonal mushrooms and white truffle, steamed prawn hakao with Singapore chili-crab cream, Thai noodles with peanut bolognese, tempura-coated Peking duck crepes with hoisin mayonnaise and flamed scallop nigiri with wasabi mayo. The group also runs Le MACAO on the Castellana, and hosts live music and events.

Getting There

On Calle del Príncipe in the Cortes barrio (Centro district), in Madrid's Barrio de las Letras, close to Puerta del Sol and the Teatro de la Comedia.

Nearby

Cortes sits between the parliament and the museums, so the pavements carry politicians, visitors and locals in roughly equal measure. The eating covers everything from cocktail rooms to serious kitchens, often behind doors that give nothing away. Congreso de los Diputados and Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza bookend it.
