Casa Labra is a traditional Madrid taberna in the Sol neighbourhood, founded in 1860 and known for bacalao dishes like soldaditos de pavia. It's also the birthplace of Spain's Socialist Party (PSOE), founded within its walls in 1879. In 2023, it won the Premio al Plato Castizo at the Madrid Gastronomy Awards for the soldaditos de pavia, served since 1860.

Background

About Casa Labra

The Story

Casa Labra has been a taberna on Calle de Tetuán since 1860, passed from generation to generation, and on 2 May 1879 Spain's Socialist Party (PSOE) was founded within its walls. The house recalls that in 1900 Madrid had around 1,500 tabernas for 840,000 people, with three on Calle de Tetuán alone, and that barely a dozen of that generation survive. Owners Manuel and Álvaro Molina collected the Academia Madrileña de Gastronomía's Premio al Plato Castizo in 2023 for the fried cod the bar has served since it opened. It holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol.

The Cuisine

Bacalao above all: the house tajada, one piece of prime battered and fried salt cod (the soldadito de Pavía), and homemade cod croquetas, eaten at the counter with a caña, a glass of Valdepeñas or vermouth on tap. The rest of the tapas list is short and classic: a banderilla of tuna in escabeche with tomato, a veal empanadilla and tortilla de patata, plus raciones and bocadillos of Guijuelo Ibérico ham, lomo and chorizo cular, Manchego and a pepito de ternera.

The History

Casa Labra opened in 1860 in the heart of Sol, and less than twenty years later, on 2 May 1879, Pablo Iglesias and a small group of printers and workers founded Spain's Socialist Party here. The taberna still runs the way old Madrid bars did, with separate counters for food and drink, and has been frying its cod across three centuries. In 2023 the dish took the Premio al Plato Castizo at the Madrid Gastronomy Awards.

Tapas Only, For Now

The house website currently says the restaurant dining room is closed and only the tapas bar is serving. The dining-room carta, when it runs, goes much further into cod: bacalao al pil-pil, a la vizcaína, a la bilbaína, in salsa verde, al ajoarriero, with mushrooms and capers, and a cod omelette, plus gazpacho, salmorejo and sopa de ajo. For now, come for the tajadas and croquetas at the bar, and check before planning a sit-down meal.

Drinks

At the bar it's cañas, Valdepeñas by the caña or bottle, Rioja by the glass, vermouth on tap, manzanilla, fino and moscatel. The wine list reaches Rías Baixas albariño from Fefiñanes and Martín Códax, Madrid reds from Vinos Jeromín, Ribera from Protos, Pesquera and Hacienda Monasterio, Rioja from Muga and Marqués de Riscal, a Bierzo mencía and a Pedro Ximénez by the glass.

The Team

Manuel and Álvaro Molina own Casa Labra today; they accepted the Academia Madrileña de Gastronomía's 2023 Premio al Plato Castizo on the restaurant's behalf, for the soldaditos de pavia it has served since 1860.

Experience

Casa Labra Dining Experience

An old-school Madrid bar with wooden frontages, a zinc counter and marble tables, which has changed little since 1860. It keeps the old habit of separate counters for ordering food and drink, and it's nearly always packed, so you may end up eating your cod standing in the street with your hands, which is half the fun.

Getting There

Calle de Tetuán 12, in Sol, right next to El Corte Inglés just off Puerta del Sol.

Nearby

Sol is the dead centre of the city and behaves like it, busy and walked through by everyone heading somewhere else. The trick is knowing which doors are worth stopping at, because rooms built for visitors sit right beside ones locals have used for decades. Círculo de Bellas Artes and Edificio Metrópolis mark the smarter edge, towards Chueca.
