Gran Vía

Gran Vía is a 1.3-kilometre avenue through central Madrid, running from Calle de Alcalá near Plaza de Cibeles to Plaza de España through the Centro district. Conceived as a Haussmann-style thoroughfare, it was approved in 1904 and built in phases between 1910 and 1929. Its buildings showcase early 20th-century revival styles from Plateresque to Art Deco, including the Metropolis and Telefónica buildings. Its Plaza del Callao stretch, lined with cinemas, became known as 'Madrid's Broadway.'
