Background
About Tacoctelería
The Story
Jimmy Lozano grew up in Mexico and worked as a dancer, first with a company in France and later with the Madrid folk-dance group Leyendas de México. Touring Germany, Austria and Denmark, he was unimpressed by the Mexican restaurants he tried and decided to open one in Madrid, which he chose for its close ties to Mexico and what he called Europe's largest Mexican community. Lower rents during the pandemic gave him the chance to take the space on Calle Valverde, and running it eventually meant giving up dancing.
The Cuisine
Mexican home cooking: tacos al pastor, cochinita pibil, carnitas and chicken tinga, quesadillas and burritos, enchiladas mineras, chilaquiles and tortilla soup, with vegan versions of the al pastor and a carrot tinga.
A Family Kitchen
The move also brought Lozano's parents and brother to Madrid. His parents had cooked for a living in Mexico City and agreed to come and run the kitchen, and Lozano credits much of the restaurant's success to them. The aim, in his words, is authentic Mexican food, made with good produce and, where possible, ingredients from Mexico. One of the house specials is listed on the menu as My Dad's Alambre.
The Menu
Tacos come by the plate or as tastings: a six-taco tasting, an eight-meat tasting and a taquiza for three or four to share. The fillings include al pastor, carnitas, cochinita pibil and chicken tinga, with a vegan al pastor and a carrot tinga for non-meat eaters. Beyond tacos there are nachos and guacamole, cochinita pibil croquettes, choriqueso, flautas, red chilaquiles, enchiladas mineras with chorizo or chicken, a grilled-beef cazuelita and tortilla soup. Desserts include pan de elote.
Margaritas, Mezcal and Micheladas
The bar side, which the house brands 'mixología mexa', runs to margaritas (lime, passion fruit, mango spicy, jalapeño), mezcalitas, palomas and a Mexican mule, plus micheladas and other beer-based miches. There's a short list of mezcals and sotol, with an agave-spirits tasting, and tequilas from blanco to reposado. Agua de horchata, tamarind and hibiscus are sold by the glass or the bottle, and the beers include Pacífico, Modelo and Negra Modelo.

On Calle Valverde in the Universidad barrio of Centro, a short walk from Gran Vía.
Nearby
Universidad is the student-facing edge of the centre, young and busy and cheap in places, ambitious in others. The eating shifts block by block, from taverns pouring vermut to kitchens doing genuinely contemporary cooking. It runs into Malasaña and Gran Vía, and the mood changes with it.
