Leinerhaus
Leinerhaus
Leinerhaus is a German restaurant and beer house on Calle de la Ballesta, just north of Gran Vía, run by Mario Lasheras Meierlohr with his mother, Heidi. The family ran the Leinerbräu brewery restaurant in Upper Franconia from 1968 to 1988, and the carta carries their recipes: great-grandfather Karl's house sausages, Leberkäse, Käsespätzle, pork knuckle and Heidi's apple strudel. The beer list leans on small Franconian breweries, including Schlenkerla's smoked beers from Bamberg.

About Leinerhaus
The Story
The Meierlohr family has four generations in hospitality. Hedwig and Georg Meierlohr met in 1950 at a spa in Oberstdorf, worked at the Hotel Bachmair Weissach on the Tegernsee, then ran the Café Schultz in Kronach, Upper Franconia, from 1959. In August 1968 the Leiner brewery in Förtschendorf handed them its restaurant and hotel, Leinerbräu, with Hedwig in the kitchen and Georg, a master pastry cook, in charge of desserts and of serving the beer. They closed it in 1988 when Georg fell ill. More than three decades later their grandson Mario Lasheras Meierlohr and his mother Heidi, who had run the dining room with her father, brought the name to Madrid.
The Cuisine
Bavarian and Franconian home cooking from the Meierlohr family's recipes: pretzels, herring salad and boards of German salads, sausages, Leberkäse, Käsespätzle, pork knuckle and apple strudel.
The Carta
Leiner Platten are tasting boards of two or four home-made German salads (€13.50/€23), next to a herring salad with apple and dill, pretzels with butter or cheese and a Lebkuchen heart. The sausages include Munich Weisswürste with sweet mustard and a pretzel (€10), Opa Karl's house sausages, made to great-grandfather Karl's recipe and served with spent-grain bread (€14), Nürnberger with sauerkraut, a cheese-filled Käsekrainer, a Berlin Currywurst with a vegan option (€12.90) and a three-sausage tasting with mash and sauerkraut (€23). From the stews: Leberkäse with a fried egg and potato-cucumber salad (€13), Käsespätzle with fried onions (€14.50) and a roast pork knuckle with bread dumpling and sauerkraut for two (€26), which must be ordered in advance. Heidi's apple strudel is €7.
The Forgotten Beers
Since 2023 Mario Leiner has been importing what the house calls the forgotten beers of Upper Franconia, from small family breweries, and the bottle selection changes every week. On tap there's Leiner-Bräu Pils and Leiner Zwickel, Schlenkerla's smoked Märzen, Krug Bräu Keller, Huppendorfer Vollbier, Köstritzer Schwarzbier and St. Georgen Keller, mostly €4–5 for a third of a litre and €6.50–7 for half. Bottles run to Augustiner Hell, Tegernseer Hell, four Schneider wheat beers including the 12% Aventinus Eisbock, and more Schlenkerla smoked beers. The house also makes its own prepared vermouths, led by the Leinermut, shaken with Giro gin, orange juice and brine.

Universidad is the student-facing edge of the centre, young and busy and cheap in places, ambitious in others. The eating shifts block by block, from taverns pouring vermut to kitchens doing genuinely contemporary cooking. It runs into Malasaña and Gran Vía, and the mood changes with it.
