Plaza Mayor

Plaza Mayor is a rectangular arcaded square in Madrid's Centro district, built 1617-1619 under Philip III to designs by architect Juan Gómez de Mora, replacing an earlier marketplace known as the Plaza del Arrabal. Enclosed by residential buildings with 237 balconies, it is centred on a bronze equestrian statue of Philip III cast in 1616 by Giambologna and Pietro Tacca. The Casa de la Panadería façade is covered in mythological murals, and the square hosts an annual Christmas market.
