Background

About Nilah

The Story

Nilah brings South Indian cooking to central Madrid, a short walk from Plaza Mayor. It frames the food as 'food for the soul', a trip to South India without leaving the most traditional part of the city.

The Cuisine

South Indian, led by dosas and oothappam, with Tamil Chettinad and Kerala Malabar curries, biryanis, kothu and Ceylon parotta, and an Indo-Chinese corner of noodles and Manchurian dishes.

The dosa list

Dosas are the core of the carta and every one is gluten-free: a plain dosa is €8, the masala dosa €11.70, the paper roast €13.80, and fillings run up to paneer and Schezwan versions at €15.50 to €17. Oothappam, the thicker rice-and-lentil pancake, comes onion, tomato, podi or mixed veg from €10 to €16.

Curries, biryani and parotta

Chicken curries (Chettinad, Madurai, Thalassery, pepper) are €15, mutton versions €17, and fish and prawn curries €18 to €19. Biryanis run from €14 for veg to €21.60 for prawn. Starters include medhu vada, idly, Chicken 65 and pani puri, and the breads go from naan and chapathi to Ceylon and kothu parotta.

Thalis at lunch

Tuesday to Friday at lunch there are thalis, not available at weekends or on holidays and not for sharing. The Special Nilah Thali, €30 per person, lays out seventeen items: mutton, chicken and fish gravies, fries, vegetables, a cone dosa, rice, chapati, rasam and rava kesari to finish.

Getting There

Calle de Toledo 12, in the Sol area of Centro, just south of Plaza Mayor in central Madrid.

Nearby

Sol is the dead centre of the city and behaves like it, busy and walked through by everyone heading somewhere else. The trick is knowing which doors are worth stopping at, because rooms built for visitors sit right beside ones locals have used for decades. Círculo de Bellas Artes and Edificio Metrópolis mark the smarter edge, towards Chueca.
