Casa Labra opened in 1860 on Calle de Tetuán, near Puerta del Sol, and takes its name from an early owner, Antonio Labra. In its back room, Pablo Iglesias and twenty-five colleagues founded the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) on May 2, 1879. The Molina family bought the business in 1947; it was Manuel Molina Santisteban, an earlier generation of the family, who made the taberna's salt-cod pincho, the soldaditos de pavía, a Madrid institution. Today, Manuel Molina runs Casa Labra alongside Álvaro Molina, part of the family's fourth generation; in 2023 the two accepted the Academia Madrileña de Gastronomía's Premio al Plato Castizo on the restaurant's behalf, for the soldaditos de pavía it has served since it opened.
