Álvaro Molina is part of the fourth generation of the Molina family running Casa Labra, a taberna that opened in 1860 near Puerta del Sol and takes its name from an early owner, Antonio Labra. The Molina family has owned it since 1947, when Manuel Molina Santisteban, Álvaro's great-grandfather, made its salt-cod pincho a Madrid institution. Pablo Iglesias founded the PSOE in its back room in 1879. Today Álvaro runs Casa Labra alongside Manuel Molina.

Career

Casa Labra opened in 1860 on Calle de Tetuán, a few steps from Puerta del Sol, and takes its name from an early owner, Antonio Labra. In its back room, Pablo Iglesias and twenty-five colleagues founded the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) on May 2, 1879. The Molina family has owned the taberna since 1947, when Manuel Molina Santisteban, Álvaro's great-grandfather, took it over and made its salt-cod pincho, the soldaditos de pavía, a Madrid institution. Álvaro Molina is part of the fourth generation of the family to run it, alongside Manuel Molina; in 2023 the two accepted the Academia Madrileña de Gastronomía's Premio al Plato Castizo on the restaurant's behalf, for the soldaditos de pavía it has served since it opened.
