What you'll find
L'Olivar is the biggest of Palma's covered food markets and the one locals actually shop in. The ground floor runs on fish and seafood, with the counters laid out in a long block, and the rest splits between butchers, greengrocers, and stalls selling cheese, olives, dried fruit and nuts. Mallorcan staples are everywhere once you start looking: sobrassada, island cheeses, capers, almonds, and the coca and ensaïmada that turn up in every bakery on the island. Several stalls double as bars, so you can buy prawns or a plate of jamón at a counter and have it put in front of you a few metres away, which is the reason a lot of people come at all.
When to go
The market opens at 7:00 Monday to Saturday and the counters run until 15:00, with a partial reopening from 15:00 to 20:00. It's closed on Sunday. Because the fish stalls are the draw, the morning is the part of the day worth planning around: everything is out, and nothing has sold through yet. Monday is the thinnest day for fish, since the market's own site says only some fish shops open occasionally that day. On public holidays the market tells you to check ahead rather than assume.
