Palacio de Cibeles

Palacio de Cibeles, at Plaza de Cibeles in Madrid's Retiro district, was built between 1907 and 1919 to a design by architects Antonio Palacios and Joaquín Otamendi, who won a municipal competition. It opened in 1919 as the city's main post office and telecommunications headquarters, and is considered an early example of Modernismo in an Eclectic, Neo-Plateresque style with white facades. Today it houses Madrid's City Council and the public cultural centre CentroCentro.
