Azotea del Círculo is the rooftop bar and restaurant of the Círculo de Bellas Artes, reached by a glass lift from the building's lobby, with views over Gran Vía and the Metrópolis dome. Chef Manuel Berganza cooks clean-flavoured, product-led Spanish plates with a background of smoke, and Luca Anastasio runs a cocktail list built around Martini. Access to the rooftop needs a ticket from the Círculo, and it holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol.

Background

About Azotea del Círculo

The Story

The rooftop of the Círculo de Bellas Artes, the arts centre on Calle de Alcalá, was long known as Tartan Roof; today Azotea Grupo runs it as Azotea del Círculo. The pitch is simple: the sky over Madrid, with sunset over the rooftops, Gran Vía and the Edificio Metrópolis, and a terrace the group also hosts private and corporate events on. Azotea del Círculo sits on the roof of the Círculo de Bellas Artes, which is why the address starts with the building rather than the street. The Guía Repsol lists it under terraces and gives it a Solete.

The Cuisine

Spanish, product-led cooking with traditional techniques and a hint of smoke: snacks like gildas and Ibérico croquetas, tuna and beef tartares, two rices, fish such as turbot al pil-pil and whole sea bass, and grilled meats.

Getting Up There

The rooftop sits 56 metres above Calle de Alcalá, and a glass-doored lift runs straight up from the Círculo's lobby; the building is crowned by Juan Luis Vassallo's bronze Minerva, the Círculo's emblem. Going up requires a general entry ticket from the Círculo de Bellas Artes, sold online or at the building's reception (only at reception between 14:00 and 16:00 and after 21:00). The ticket gives rooftop access but doesn't guarantee a spot in the café-restaurant area, so book a table if you want to eat. The rooftop opens at 10:00 every day, until 01:30 Sunday to Thursday (last entry 00:30) and 02:00 on Friday and Saturday (last entry 01:00); check the Círculo's ticket page for current rates and any closure notices.

The Kitchen and the Bar

Chef Manuel Berganza's carta opens with snacks (a gilda with confit tomato, Ibérico ham croquetas, a roast zamburiña with carrot escabeche, salmorejo with semi-cured tuna) and moves on to almadraba tuna tartare with sherry dressing, aged-beef tartare, roast artichokes with romesco, and a red-prawn dry rice. Fish includes turbot al pil-pil, monkfish with beurre blanc and a whole sea bass a la espalda for the table; meats run from Ibérico presa with black garlic to Angus skirt steak and entrecôte. At the bar, Luca Anastasio's list leans on the Martini range: Bianco, Hugo and Fiero spritzes, negronis and a mezcal 'Mezcaloni', alongside classics such as a Porn Star Martini, paloma and espresso martini, most at €14. One terrace is given over entirely to the Martini theme.

It's the roof of the Círculo de Bellas Artes, entrance on Calle del Marqués de Casa Riera 2, 28004, in the Centro district of Madrid.

Nearby

Barrio de las Letras is the old literary quarter, narrow and atmospheric, with quotations set into the paving. The eating is unusually varied for so small an area, from taverns and cocktail bars to kitchens working at a serious level. Museo del Prado and Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza are on the doorstep.
