Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza

The Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza opened in 1992 on Paseo del Prado, in the Palace of Villahermosa as remodelled by architect Rafael Moneo. It displays the Thyssen-Bornemisza family collection, begun in the 1920s by Heinrich, Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza and expanded by his son Hans Heinrich, bought by the Spanish government in 1993. Once the second-largest private art collection in the world after the British Royal Collection, it spans eight centuries of European art.
