Casa Suecia opened in 1956 on Calle del Marqués de Casa Riera, in the Cortes quarter, as the heart of Madrid's Swedish community and a meeting point for writers such as Cortázar, Sábato and Hemingway. Today it's a set of spaces decorated by Lázaro Rosa-Violán: a lobby bar open from 08:00, a restaurant with Mediterranean and traditional cooking led by chef Javier Utrero, a rooftop terrace and the speakeasy-style Clandestino cocktail bar. There's an executive menu on weekdays and brunch at weekends.

Background

About Casa Suecia

The Story

Casa Suecia opened in Madrid in 1956. It was the centre of the city's Swedish community and a meeting place for intellectuals, favoured on Swedish royal visits and by writers including Julio Cortázar, Ernesto Sábato and Ernest Hemingway. The building was later redesigned by Lázaro Rosa-Violán, and now houses a lobby bar, a restaurant with a semi-private library room, a rooftop and Clandestino, a cocktail bar inspired by Prohibition and named in honour of a famous author.

The Cuisine

Mediterranean and traditional Spanish cooking with Nordic touches, led by chef Javier Utrero, plus a wine cellar of more than 100 references.

From the carta

There's Iberian ham sliced to order (€29), a Norwegian smoked fish selection (€22), house croquetas, Herrera torrezno with sweet potato, Canarian papas arrugadas with smoked herring, clams, and a tuna tiradito with spicy mango. Mains include black rice with squid (€21), hake with clams, charcoal-oven tuna belly and salt-baked sea bass for two, black-bellied redfish with crayfish 'Nordic-style', and from the charcoal oven entrecôte (€22), aged beef tenderloin (€23) and a 500 g Avileña beef chop (€26). If undecided, the carta suggests letting Utrero steer you to off-menu dishes.

Menus and brunch

The lobby bar serves an executive menu on working weekdays, there's a Bubble Brunch in the restaurant and a BBQ Brunch on the rooftop at weekends, and the 'God Save the House' tasting menu runs alongside the carta. In cold months, cocido madrileño is served in the pot. The restaurant opens for lunch and dinner but is closed on Sunday evening.
