Background

About DokiDoki

The Story

DokiDoki opened on Calle Villalar in early 2015. 'Doki doki' is the onomatopoeia Japanese speakers use for the beat of a heart when something excites you, which is the effect the founders were after. It was set up by chef Miguel de Vega, who came to Japanese cooking from front-of-house in a Japanese restaurant and trained with Martín Berasategui and Diego Guerrero, and who designed the room to his own specifications.

The Cuisine

Japanese cooking with classic technique and creative touches, built on product and clean flavours. Early signatures included anchovy tempura with eel sauce and red-pepper coulis, scallop skewers with ponzu and orange, three kinds of gyoza (curried vegetable, wagyu oxtail and pork cheek with demi-glace) and a long list of nigiri such as wild sea bass with black garlic, hamachi with umeboshi and toro with black truffle, alongside sashimi platters, makis and a wagyu tataki.

The Sushi Bar

The room was made to measure: some 12,500 strips of wood make up the tables and the sushi bar, where the sushi chefs work in front of the counter seats. The nigiri list is long and the best way to see what the kitchen does, pairing fish with things like black garlic, umeboshi, truffle or shiitake and eel sauce. Makis of toro tartare with chives and tempura round things out.

Booking and Format

It's open for lunch and dinner Tuesday to Saturday, Sunday for lunch, and closed Mondays. Tables are booked through TheFork or by phone on 917 79 36 49. The menu format has changed in recent years, so ask what tasting options are running when you book.
