Background

About Patio de Leones

The Story

Patio de Leones calls itself a 'cosmic-cañí' taberna, a tribute to Madrid's chulapos and chulapas and to the Puerta de Alcalá it faces, and it's run by the Teatro 1898 group. It holds a Repsol Solete.

The Cuisine

Spanish classics from around the country, served from breakfast to late: Santander anchovies, pulpo a la gallega, cocido madrileño, croquetas, seafood paella and churros with homemade chocolate.

Tiles, Bulls and Chulapos

The interiors carry the colourful stamp of multidisciplinary artist Sergio Mora, whose canvases and hand-painted tile murals pay tribute to Spanish culture's 'surreal and picturesque magic', with flamenco icons and universal geniuses with Spanish surnames. Sculptor Puente Jerez, known for his work around bullfighting, also contributed, the tableware is by La Cartuja de Sevilla, the chulapo-inspired staff uniforms are by La Condesa, interior designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán helped shape the neo-cañí style, and the creative agency Ballet built the brand.

Eating and Jaleo

The kitchen is open from morning to closing, with breakfast tostadas and weekend churros con chocolate, then a carta built on traditional Spanish recipes: Cinco Jotas ham and croquetas, anchovies, pulpo a la gallega, seafood paella and baked turbot, and cocido madrileño. Evenings lean festive, with live flamenquito, weekend DJ sessions and big-screen football. Tables are held for two hours, groups of more than eight book by phone, and there's a waiting list when it's full; dishes can also be ordered for delivery.
