Goen is a modern izakaya on Calle de Valenzuela in Jerónimos, near the Retiro and the Prado, inspired by the irreverent spirit of Osaka's grandmothers. The kitchen works with dashi, koji, fermentation and house pickles on a seasonal sharing menu, and the bar matches it with Japanese-accented cocktails, sake, wine, Japanese beer and house kombucha. It's open Wednesday to Sunday for lunch and dinner.

Background

About Goen

The Story

Goen (ご縁) refers to chance encounters that come to mean something: someone you meet, a flavour you discover, an unplanned seat at the bar that becomes your favourite. The izakaya wants to give those moments a place to happen in Jerónimos and to build a community of regulars. Its inspiration is the irreverent spirit of Osaka's obaachan, grandmothers who mix tradition, bold prints and good conversation with complete ease; Japanese technique is the foundation, and curiosity pulls the cooking towards China, Korea and the rest of Asia.

The Cuisine

Contemporary Japanese for sharing, built on contrast: bright pickles, the depth of koji and dashi, crisp bites and slow-cooked finishes, changing with the season.

The Late Summer Menu

The current seasonal menu runs from a tsukemono moriawase of house pickles and fried aubergine marinated in tsuyu with katsuobushi and crisp lotus root, to prawn harumaki with tomato kimchi, Aomori scallops with kimizu hollandaise and butter-soy, duck magret with tosazu jelly and ume, and octopus with doubanjiang and black-vinegar jelly. The bigger plates are a chirashizushi of otoro, yellowtail, salmon, prawn and ikura, a 'koji tartar' of dry-aged sirloin cured in shio koji with cured yolk and negi gyoza, and buta kakuni pork belly with ajitama and karashi. For dessert there's a fig and sesame-tofu shiraae and a hojicha tiramisù, the 'hojichamisú'. Plates are roughly €15 to €32.

Pickles and the Bar

Pickles are a house obsession: jabara-cut baby cucumber in rice vinegar, lotus root in sweet vinegar with red shiso, salt-pickled daikon with dried yuzu and shichimi, and shiso leaves with a kimchi twist. The bar is meant to be a destination in its own right, working ingredients such as hojicha, yuzu, shiso and aonori into signature cocktails, alongside sake by the glass, characterful wines, Japanese beer and house kombucha.

Goen Dining Experience

Warm wood, low light, red and black, with music setting the pace: the house calls it 'glam funk', intimate and playful and made for staying a little longer. You can eat at the bar or at the tables, and the room also hosts private gatherings, DJs, exhibitions and brand collaborations.

Getting There

It's on Calle de Valenzuela in Jerónimos, the Retiro-district neighbourhood beside the park and the Prado.

Nearby

Jerónimos is the museum quarter, calm and green and expensive, wrapped around Museo del Prado. The eating is polished and unhurried, built for people who have spent a morning looking at paintings. Plaza de Cibeles and Palacio de Cibeles mark the way back into the noise.
