Catedral de la Almudena

The Almudena Cathedral stands opposite the Royal Palace in Madrid's Palacio neighbourhood. Its foundation stone was laid in 1883 to a design by Francisco de Cubas, initially planned as a parish church before a papal bull in 1885 changed it to a Gothic Revival cathedral; the plans were later adapted by Fernando Chueca Goitia in 1950. Pope John Paul II consecrated the finished cathedral on 15 June 1993. The 102-metre-long building combines Neoclassical, Neo-Gothic and Neo-Romanesque elements.
