Background

About La Esquina del Real

The Story

La Esquina del Real opened in 1991 under the French-Swiss-trained chef Marcel Margosian, known for his sauces, duck and game; Jesús Oliva later took over the kitchen, having trained in Madrid and then in Grenoble in the French Alps. It sits by Teatro Real, which is where the name comes from.

The Cuisine

Classic French bistro cooking made from scratch, confit de canard, escargots bourguignonne, steak tartar, an oxtail parmentier and French onion soup, finished with homemade desserts like a tarta tatin flambeed in calvados.

The Wine List

The wine list leans French, as the cooking does: Rhône, a Saint-Émilion grand cru from Château Bellevue Figeac, Bourgogne pinot noirs from Trenel and David Duband, a Loire pinot from Château de Tracy, a Blanquette de Limoux and champagnes from Veuve Clicquot to grower bottles. The Spanish side runs from Calatayud garnacha and Ribeira Sacra mencía to Rioja, Ribera del Duero names like Pago de Carraovejas and Alión, and Madrid's own Tagonius, with house wines at €23 a bottle. Drinks prices on the list are shown before 10% VAT.

Experience

La Esquina del Real Dining Experience

It is small and unshowy, copper pots and little treasures brought from France set among stone pillars, wooden beams and bare brick. The pace is relaxed and made for a long sobremesa over homemade desserts.

Getting There

On the corner of Calle Unión and Calle Amnistía in the Barrio de los Austrias, the old heart of Madrid, next to Teatro Real and the Plaza de Oriente.

Nearby

Palacio is the grand, historic western edge of the centre, wrapped around Palacio Real de Madrid and Plaza de Oriente. The eating runs from tavern cooking that has not changed in generations to small rooms doing something quieter and more modern. Teatro Real and Jardines de Sabatini set the pace, which is slower here.
