Background

About Casa Jaguar

The Story

Casa Jaguar is a small Madrid group of Latin American kitchens. Besides this restaurant by Ópera, it runs Casa Jaguar Mercado, a stall in the Antón Martín market on Calle de Santa Isabel, and Casa Jaguar Café in the San Fernando market on Calle Embajadores.

The Cuisine

A tour of Latin American cooking, mainly Peruvian, Mexican, Brazilian and Colombian by the house's own account: ceviche, arepas, tacos, patacones and slow-cooked meat, with home-made desserts.

The Ópera Carta

Starters include a Peruvian corvina ceviche with coconut leche de tigre, mango, ají amarillo, lime and ginger; ripe plantain filled with mascarpone and melted Oaxaca cheese with pico de gallo; a reina pepiada arepa with free-range chicken, avocado and mayonnaise; and a Trío de los Andes of baked and fried sweet potato, potato and yuca with chipotle mayonnaise. Mains run to Corvina Jaguar, a grilled corvina loin finished in the oven, milanesa napolitana in panko, three cochinita pibil tacos with pork in achiote, orange and cinnamon, and a slow-cooked Black Angus beef rib with creamed corn and coconut milk.

The Bar

The house cocktails are €9 each: the Jaguar Passion (pisco, Aperol, passion fruit, orange, lime and agave), traditional and mango pisco sours, a Jungle Bird, the Oaxaqueño with mezcal, amontillado, ginger and lime, a Jamaica rum punch and a spicy habanero mango margarita. There's a cocktail of the day at €9, and classics such as a mojito, margarita or caipirinha are €7. Beers include Cusqueña and Cristal from Peru and Pacífico, Modelo and Corona from Mexico, and the alcohol-free list has agua de Jamaica and a ginger lemonade.

Experience

Casa Jaguar Dining Experience

The house calls it a tropical restaurant with vintage decoration: tropical plants, murals on wood-panelled walls, small wooden tables and bamboo armchairs. It's informal, aimed at friends, families and couples, and it stays open late, until 2:00 at weekends. The paper placemats double as drawing paper for the house's #Jaguart game, in which diners post their doodles and the best one of the month wins cocktails.
