Plaza de Oriente

Plaza de Oriente lies between the Royal Palace to the west and the Teatro Real to the east, with the Royal Monastery of the Incarnation to the north. King Joseph I ordered the demolition of the medieval houses that once stood here, and the square was formally designed in 1844 by architect Narciso Pascual y Colomer. At its centre stands an equestrian monument to Philip IV by sculptor Pietro Tacca, surrounded by statues of 44 medieval Spanish kings.
