About Lalopez
The Story
Lalopez turned a market stall inside Mercado Antón Martín into a contemporary eatery, where good product, creativity and a curated wine list all sit together in one small space. It won the Academia Madrileña de Gastronomía's award for best market stand.
The Cuisine
The stall runs on dishes like tomate confitado, tomato in miso, chorizo croquetas and a txistorra-flatbread version, soft-shell crab curry in tempura, ribeye meatballs in sherry sauce, and a crispy glazed veal sweetbread with homemade kimchi, finishing on a tiramisu made to order.
The Most Chulaza Stall in the Market
Lalopez opened in December 2020 on the ground floor of Mercado Antón Martín, the turquoise stall, as its own site puts it, and calls itself 'la más chulaza'. It quickly became a reference for eating and drinking well at a fair price. The set-up is a small bar pressed against the kitchen facing a communal table, with a Basque and Madrileño soul split between Mai and Sergio. It won the Academia Madrileña de Gastronomía's award for best market stand.
The Carta
The carta mixes market produce, family recipes and a few curries Sergio learned from one of his teachers. To start: a creamy ensaladilla with prawn tartare, tomato confit with soy, marinated herring with avocado and mango, foie micuit with palo cortado and bitter orange, a bourbon steak tartare and bonito in escabeche, with bites such as a double herring gilda and a txistorra talo croqueta. The 'platazos' include callos 'como los de antes', crispy veal sweetbread glazed in barbecue sauce with house kimchi, chanterelles in mustard meunière, Tolosa-style beans, cod kokotxas with a young-garlic pil-pil, boletus and ham rice, txuleta meatballs in the house curry and skate in black butter. The tiramisu is finished at the counter to order.
The Cellar
For a market stall, the wine goes surprisingly deep, and Mai's recommendations are part of the fun. Bottles have included a 2014 Viña Tondonia white reserva from López de Heredia and Remírez de Ganuza's María from Rioja, alongside original, lesser-known labels.
The Chef
The Team
Chef Sergio Mayor trained at Viridiana and cooked for El Bulli Catering with Paco Roncero, and has also worked as a private chef for David Guetta and on the TV show Supervivientes. His partner Maialen Parra de Arancibia, Mai, from Gipuzkoa, runs the floor and the wine, having come to the front of house with no prior hospitality experience. It's essentially a two-person operation.

Lalopez Dining Experience
A small, snug stall with a modest bar right against the kitchen and a communal table opposite, so comfort isn't the point. The mood is lively and casual, Mai's welcome is warm and full of recommendations, and tables are hard to get.

Get directions→Getting There
Lalopez runs out of a stall inside Mercado Antón Martín, on Calle de Santa Isabel in Embajadores, about 500 m north-west of the Reina Sofía and 800 m north-west of Atocha station. It's a small, snug space at the centre of the market that's been turned into a proper sit-down operation.
Nearby
Embajadores is old working Madrid, dense and unpolished, and it rewards anyone willing to walk its side streets. The eating runs from taverns that have been there for generations to newer rooms doing something quite different. El Rastro spills through it on market days, and Lavapiés is the same conversation continued uphill.
