El Mono de la Pila is a small cevichería on the first floor of the Mercado de Antón Martín, at the edge of Lavapiés. Ceviches are made to order in a tiny kitchen you can watch: choose wild fish, octopus, prawns or a mix, a medium (€8.40) or large (€10.90) portion, and a house sauce inspired by the countries that eat ceviche, from leche de tigre with rocoto to coconut and mango or a Jipijapa peanut sauce. There are vegan ceviches and salads too.

Background

About El Mono de la Pila

The Story

El Mono de la Pila presents itself as a little corner of fresh ceviches in the Mercado de Antón Martín, where every plate is prepared to order from carefully chosen ingredients, from classic ceviches to the house's own creations, to eat in or take away.

The Cuisine

Ceviche made to order, with all sauces made in house and inspired by the different Latin American countries that eat ceviche, plus vegan ceviches, salads and huancaína bravas.

Build Your Ceviche

Pick a size, medium (€8.40) or large (€10.90); the fish or seafood, wild fish, octopus, wild prawns or a mix; and a sauce: Al Tigre (leche de tigre, rocoto and lime), Al Chipotle (tomato, avocado, chipotle and tamarind), Al Coco (coconut milk, mango and avocado), A la Pasión (lime, lemon, orange and passion fruit), Pacífico (tomato, lime and orange) or Jipijapa (peanut, onion, pepper and tomato). Every ceviche comes with coriander, sweet potato or avocado and corn, and you can add a base of quinoa or coconut rice, chifles or nachos for €1.

Vegan and Sides

A mushroom ceviche with avocado, mango and red pepper and a quinoa salad are both vegan and gluten-free (€7.50), and the huancaína bravas, sliced potatoes in spicy huancaína sauce, come small or large.

Getting There

On the first floor of the Mercado de Antón Martín, Calle de Santa Isabel 5 (with another entrance on Calle del Duque de Fernán Núñez), in the Embajadores quarter of Centro.

Nearby

Embajadores is old working Madrid, dense and unpolished, and it rewards anyone willing to walk its side streets. The eating runs from taverns that have been there for generations to newer rooms doing something quite different. El Rastro spills through it on market days, and Lavapiés is the same conversation continued uphill.
