Asian Army is a Southeast Asian canteen inside the Mercado de Antón Martín, on the edge of the Barrio de las Letras. The menu crosses Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam: satay, siu mai, murtabak and Vietnamese pork skewers to start, then grandma's laksa, nasi lemak, Hainanese chicken rice, char kway teow, sop buntut oxtail soup and a vegan lodeh curry. Many plates are made to share, and there's a house lager.

Background

About Asian Army

The Story

Asian Army is a canteen-style Southeast Asian kitchen inside the Mercado de Antón Martín. The house describes its cooking as born of authenticity and of the experience of eating across Southeast Asia, from Indonesia and Singapore to Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam, and it takes its name, and its motto, from the line that an army marches on its stomach.

The Cuisine

Southeast Asian street and home cooking: Indonesian, Malaysian and Singaporean staples such as nasi lemak, laksa, mie ayam and char kway teow, Thai som tum and massaman, and Vietnamese bún and pork skewers.

The Menu

Starters include tempeh koenjit (€6), chicken satay (€12 for four skewers), siu mai, murtabak, fried Vietnamese rolls, Vietnamese pork skewers by two, four or eight, Thai fried wings and keropok fish crackers. Among the mains: grandma's classic laksa (€15.50), nasi lemak and Hainanese chicken rice (€15 each), mie ayam, spicy chilli-pork pan mee, char kway teow, a Vietnamese bún salad, som tum papaya salad, kangkong stir-fried morning glory, sop buntut oxtail soup and massaman curry (€17.50 each), and a vegan lodeh curry. The house sambal comes by the jar.

Drinks

There's a house Asian Army lager and Singha, two craft IPAs, a short list of Spanish wines, and Southeast Asian soft drinks: Indonesian Teh Botol jasmine tea, Thai iced lemon tea, a butterfly-pea and lemongrass lemonade, and Vietnamese coffee. Mango mochi with coconut milk is the dessert.

Experience

Asian Army Dining Experience

A lively, relaxed market canteen that the house says mixes Vietnamese charm with Madrid's easy intensity. Share a few plates, Mediterranean-style, or settle in with a single bowl of noodles. It quotes Napoleon on the website: an army marches on its stomach.

Getting There

It's a stall inside the Mercado de Antón Martín, on Calle Duque de Fernán Núñez in central Madrid.

Nearby

Embajadores is old working Madrid, dense and unpolished, and it rewards anyone willing to walk its side streets. The eating runs from taverns that have been there for generations to newer rooms doing something quite different. El Rastro spills through it on market days, and Lavapiés is the same conversation continued uphill.
