Yokaloka's sushi and ramen bar sits inside the Mercado de Antón Martín, at Calle de Santa Isabel 5, and it holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol, which calls it perhaps the closest thing in Madrid to Japanese street food. Behind the informality there's careful cooking: juicy sushi, ramen with a deep broth and balanced heat, house gyoza and chirashi bowls, in a space that leans into Japanese pop culture. The group's other address, Yokaloka Matute on Plaza de Matute, is a Japanese taberna and sake bar with its own carta.

Background

About Yokaloka

The Story

Yokaloka runs two Japanese addresses a few minutes apart: this sushi and ramen counter in the Mercado de Antón Martín, and Yokaloka Matute, a taberna japonesa and sake bar on Plaza de Matute in the Barrio de las Letras. The market counter holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol's 2025 round, which praises its care for the product, its flavour and its fast, friendly service.

The Cuisine

Japanese street food: tonkotsu ramen made from a pork broth simmered for 12 hours, sushi sets, nigiri and maki, sashimi, chirashi and gyudon bowls, and small plates like takoyaki and house chicken gyoza. There are vegan dishes, including a miso ramen and a vegan sushi set, and gluten-free noodles and sushi on request.

What to Order

The ramen list runs from tonkotsu shio and shoyu to a house kimchi ramen and the Wafu Yoka, built on a broth of fresh bonito and kombu; extras include a soft hanjuku egg and kaedama, an extra serving of noodles. The house chicken gyoza is the signature small plate. On the sushi side, the Yokaloka set brings nine pieces of nigiri and maki, and house specials include flamed Norwegian salmon nigiri, smoked eel, escolar with truffle and spicy tuna uramaki; the chirashi tekka especial adds a soft egg and black truffle. Desserts are mochi, green tea truffles and dorayaki.

Getting There

Inside the Mercado de Antón Martín, at Calle de Santa Isabel 5 (stall Bajo 23), near Antón Martín metro on the Lavapiés side of central Madrid.

Nearby

Lavapiés is a steeply layered corner of central Madrid, a tight grid of narrow streets where the cooking comes from everywhere at once. The rooms are small, the prices are honest, and the good ones fill with regulars rather than reservations. Museo Reina Sofía and CaixaForum Madrid sit uphill from it, El Rastro at the bottom.
