Plaza de España

Plaza de España sits at the western end of Gran Vía in central Madrid. Its centrepiece is the Cervantes Monument, completed 1915-1916 for the third centenary of Don Quixote's publication, designed by Rafael Martínez Zapatero and Pedro Muguruza Otaño with bronze figures of Cervantes, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza by sculptor Lorenzo Coullaut Valera. The square is flanked by the 1953 Edificio España and 1957 Torre de Madrid, and reopened as a pedestrianised plaza in 2021 after renovation.
