Shangrila Bar Dimsum
Shangrila Bar Dimsum
Shangrila Bar Dimsum is a Chinese dim sum bar on Calle de Leganitos, a few minutes' walk from Plaza de España, and it holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol. In the kitchen is Liang Wang, who for years cooked at Zhou Yu Long, the tiny Chinese restaurant in the underground galleries of Plaza de España that closed in 2019 when the square was rebuilt. The draw is handmade dim sum and dumplings, homemade noodle soups, pork ribs and stir-fries at low prices, served fast. It takes no bookings, so expect a queue at peak times.

Background
About Shangrila Bar Dimsum
The Story
For years, eating at the Chinese restaurant in the Plaza de España car-park galleries was a Madrid rite of passage. Zhou Yu Long, as it was called, was tiny and plain, with shared tables and dishes at four or five euros, and it closed in 2019 when works on the square shut the galleries. Its cook, Liang Wang, moved on to a restaurant in Pozuelo de Alarcón before landing at Shangrila on Calle de Leganitos, and word of mouth brought the queues with him. Wang says his cooking is the home food his parents and grandparents taught him. According to several sources, the same address housed what's considered Madrid's first Chinese restaurant, opened in 1963.
The Cuisine
Chinese home cooking with dim sum at its heart: dumplings in different doughs, fillings and cooking methods, homemade noodles, soups, stir-fries and roast duck. The menu has been adapted for a crowd that's now more Spanish and international than before, with new dishes added alongside the old favourites.
What to Order
Start with the dim sum. The triangular dim sum, made with potato starch and filled with meat, sits alongside steamed dumplings of pork, beef, prawn or vegetables, xiao long bao, siu mai and grilled dumplings; the Guía Repsol singles out the handmade gyozas and dumplings. Then the soups: homemade noodle soup with ribs or beef, wonton soup, rice-noodle and vermicelli soups and a sweet rice-ball soup. Pork ribs are Wang's own favourite dish, and the carta runs on to stir-fried chicken or beef with vegetables, roast duck, prawns and offal dishes like tripe with leek.
Prices and Queues
Most plates cost between about €5 and €9, with soups and dumplings mostly around €5 to €7, which is a big part of why the queue forms. There are no reservations: you join the line, and the fast kitchen keeps it moving. Shangrila opens daily from 13:00 to 17:00 (17:30 at weekends) and from 19:00 to midnight.

Shangrila Bar Dimsum Dining Experience
More polished than the old basement place, with decoration that nods to Hong Kong, but just as informal. Dishes come out quickly, so tables turn over fast and the queue moves. It's open seven days a week for lunch and dinner and works for groups, families and vegetarians.

Calle de Leganitos 26, behind Gran Vía and a few minutes' walk from Plaza de España, in Madrid's Centro district. Leganitos is lined with Chinese businesses, from Asian supermarkets to travel agencies. Paid parking is nearby.
Nearby
Palacio is the grand, historic western edge of the centre, wrapped around Palacio Real de Madrid and Plaza de Oriente. The eating runs from tavern cooking that has not changed in generations to small rooms doing something quieter and more modern. Teatro Real and Jardines de Sabatini set the pace, which is slower here.
