Malasaña

Malasaña is a Madrid neighbourhood bordered by Gran Vía, Calle de Fuencarral, Calle de Carranza and Calle de San Bernardo, within the Centro district's Universidad ward. It takes its name from Manuela Malasaña, a young seamstress executed by Napoleon's forces after the Dos de Mayo Uprising of 1808. The area was the centre of the movida madrileña movement in the late 1970s and 1980s, and today is known for its nightlife, independent shops, vintage stores and weekend craft markets.
