About Kai Thai
The Story
Sergio Gallinas bought a flight to Bangkok with a backpack and came home in love with Thailand and its food. Back in Spain he worked in a Thai restaurant, travelling to Thailand regularly to buy produce he couldn't get here. Through Thai friends he met Pi Nan, who had spent years as head chef at the Thai Garden, the restaurant where he'd eaten his first massaman curry. Kai Thai opened in August 2019, and the name is his surname translated: kai is Thai for chicken, gallina in Spanish.
The Cuisine
Traditional Thai cooking with gluten-free (C), vegetarian (V) and vegan (Vn) options marked throughout: satay, dim sum, spring rolls, salads such as som tam and larb, coconut curries, stir-fries and fried rice. Thailand's Ministry of Commerce has granted it the Thai Select certification for authentic flavour and traditional preparation.
The Carta
Starters include chicken or tofu satay with peanut sauce, golden rice-paper tung tong filled with cheese and walnuts, steamed prawn-and-pork dim sum, Thai spring rolls, fresh rice-paper rolls with fruit, prawns and smoked salmon, Ibérico secreto meatballs and skewers, and kai yang chicken with tamarind. The salads are a highlight: som tam green papaya (€15.90), yam wun sen glass noodles, larb with toasted rice and mint, nam tok muu with grilled Ibérico secreto, a warm crispy-duck salad and green mango with grilled salmon. Mains run to green and red curries in coconut milk, pad kra prow with holy basil, and fried rice with chicken, prawns, beef or tofu.
Menus
On weekday lunchtimes (not public holidays) the menú del día is €16.50 for a starter, main, drink and dessert or coffee, with Singha or a Thai drink for €2 more; it changes every week. The tasting menus are for the whole table, minimum two: Khao San Road (€31.50) with satay, spring rolls, pad si eiw, green curry and pad kra prow; Chiang Mai (€36) with mango-and-salmon salad, prawn chu chee, tamarind duck and massaman; and Krabi (€42) with som tam, pad thai and mango sticky rice.
