Background

About Tita de Buenos Aires

The Story

Marcelo Settimo and Ana Antolini, an Argentine couple from families tied to bakeries and restaurants, moved to Madrid in 2020 and opened their first shop in March 2021 on Menéndez Pelayo, facing the Retiro. Tita has since grown into a network of shops across Madrid, from Chueca and La Latina to Goya, Moncloa, Chamartín and Plaza Mayor, supplied by a central obrador near the Estadio Metropolitano, and it now offers franchises. It received an honourable mention for best gourmet shop at the Premios Gastronómicos Metrópoli.

The Cuisine

Argentine empanadas made by hand, plus sándwiches de miga and homemade Argentine desserts such as alfajores de Maicena, chocotorta and cheesecake.

How the Empanadas Are Made

Everything except the final bake happens in the central obrador: doughs and fillings are made by hand following recipes the company says it has used for 50 years, many with raw materials imported from Argentina, and the empanadas are frozen and thawed under control before going into the shop ovens. They're on the large side by local standards. The range covers traditional and sweet beef, spicy shredded beef, BBQ rib, curried chicken, ham and cheese, onion and cheese, spinach, Caprese, provolone, calabresa, tuna, humita and vegetable, plus two vegan versions made with Heura.

Sandwiches, Sweets and Catering

Alongside the empanadas there are triple sándwiches de miga (ham, ham and cheese, serrano, vegetable, chicken and tuna) and homemade Argentine desserts: alfajores de Maicena, chocotorta and cheesecake. For parties and offices, catering packs run from 24 mini sandwiches for four to six people to 72 empanadas for around 25, for pick-up or delivery, and the full allergen table is published online.

Getting There

It is on Avenida de Menéndez Pelayo in the Ibiza area of Madrid's Retiro district, across from the Parque del Retiro.

Nearby

Ibiza is the residential edge of Parque del Buen Retiro, and it eats like a neighbourhood that does not need to impress anyone. The rooms are taverns, grills and seafood done properly, at prices that reflect regulars rather than visitors. Palacio de Cristal and the park are the reason to come early.
