Background

About Can Bonet Madrid

The Story

Can Bonet was born during the Covid lockdown. Its founders, Esther and Pere, say those months woke up the essence of their roots, the sea and the mountains, the smell of embers, toasted bread and caramelised sugar, and their mothers' and grandmothers' recipes got them through. Can Bonet is their tribute to those women.

The Cuisine

Traditional Catalan cooking with Mediterranean influence, which the house describes as a contemporary reading of the old tapas of Catalonia and the Balearics, built on market produce. The menu, carta and booking are on the restaurant's own site.

From the Catalan Recipe Book

The dishes the house points to are rustit cannelloni gratinated, a Christmas recipe served here all year; a creamy rice with rabbit and snails in the style of Lleida; snails a la gormanta with alioli; a black and white butifarra plate; coca with escalivada and spicy butifarra; cod loin with chickpeas and sobrasada; and crema catalana caramelised at the table. Rice dishes are among the house's signatures, and there's a vermouth hour too.

Calçots, Menus and Delivery

From November to March the restaurant runs a calçotada menu. There's a weekday lunch menu, dishes for children, group menus and a private room, and an online delivery shop for rice dishes, tapas and homemade desserts. The wine list leans on Catalan regions, with a selection of cava and champagne.

Getting There

Avenida de Menéndez Pelayo 15, in the Ibiza barrio, on the avenue that runs along the Retiro's eastern edge.

Nearby

Ibiza is the residential edge of Parque del Buen Retiro, and it eats like a neighbourhood that does not need to impress anyone. The rooms are taverns, grills and seafood done properly, at prices that reflect regulars rather than visitors. Palacio de Cristal and the park are the reason to come early.
