Sanchís, also listed as Sanchís Casa Esteban, is a bar and marisquería on Avenida de Menéndez Pelayo, in the Ibiza barrio by the Retiro, holding a Repsol Solete. Seafood raciones are the draw: coquinas, boquerones, cockles, mussels and snails, with callos and carrillada from the kitchen and a caña or a vermouth on the terrace.

Background

About Sanchís

The Story

Bar Sanchís has been a meeting point on Avenida de Menéndez Pelayo, a few metres from the Retiro, since 1979. The name confuses people almost weekly: the bar isn't run by the Real Madrid football dynasty, but the Sanchís family do own the premises, which they bought in 1972 and rented seven years later to Esteban Baquero, hence the 'Casa Esteban' on its listing. Esteban died in 2017; today his daughter Sara Baquero runs it with her husband Chema and her mother, Mari Carmen Alcocer, who still leads the kitchen. It holds a Repsol Solete.

The Cuisine

Seafood raciones in the bar tradition: coquinas, boquerones, cockles, mussels and snails, with ensaladilla rusa alongside. From the kitchen, the callos and the carrillada get singled out, and the portions are generous. A caña or a vermouth is the usual partner.

Getting There

It's on Avenida de Menendez Pelayo 13, in the Ibiza barrio of Madrid's Retiro district, by Parque del Retiro.

Nearby

Ibiza is the residential edge of Parque del Buen Retiro, and it eats like a neighbourhood that does not need to impress anyone. The rooms are taverns, grills and seafood done properly, at prices that reflect regulars rather than visitors. Palacio de Cristal and the park are the reason to come early.
