La Esperanza is a bar-restaurant on Calle de la Torrecilla del Leal, at the corner of Calle del Olmo behind the Cines Doré, in the upper part of Lavapiés, and it holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol, which calls it a wonderful bar with a castizo look and tasty food. The kitchen brings together the cultures around the Mediterranean, traditional flavours refined by current cooking: gildas, homemade boquerones, a Barceloneta bomba, smoked anchovies on coca, rice dishes and grilled artichoke flower. It runs from lunch into the small hours, with a set lunch menu, cocktails, wines, vermouth and cakes, plus art shows and live music.

Background

About La Esperanza

The Story

La Esperanza sits comfortably between the Barrio de las Letras and Lavapiés, behind the Cines Doré, in a room it describes as castizo with a 1970s streak and its own curated music. Beyond the kitchen it's a cultural space: it hangs exhibitions by illustrators and artists and has hosted a regular monthly slot for Humo, a gothic tango and glam duo. It holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol.

The Cuisine

Mediterranean cooking that sets out to bring together the cultures around the sea, with traditional flavours refined by a more current kitchen, chef's suggestions and a set lunch. There's a Catalan thread through the tapas, from a Barceloneta bomba to coca from Folgueroles and cured meats from the Berguedà, and there are coeliac and vegan options.

What to Order

The Guía Repsol recommends the rice dishes and the grilled artichoke flower, served with a porcini vinaigrette and Iberian ham. From the tapas list: gildas in four versions, patatas bravas with alioli, homemade vinegar-cured anchovies, smoked anchovies with butter on Folgueroles coca, ensaladilla with tuna belly, Galician mussels in house escabeche, Cádiz-style chicharrón, ham and chorizo croquetas, and Maldonado acorn-fed ham and txistorra with egg yolk and garum. Larger plates have included callos a la madrileña, a black fideuà rossejat with cuttlefish and prawns, grilled veal sweetbreads with chimichurri, and Gillardeau oysters.

Hours

La Esperanza opens every day from 13:00, until 02:00 most nights and 02:30 on Friday and Saturday. Tables can be booked.

Getting There

Calle de la Torrecilla del Leal 3, on the corner of Calle del Olmo, just behind the Cines Doré, between Lavapiés and the Barrio de las Letras. The nearest metro is Antón Martín (Line 1).

Nearby

Lavapiés is a steeply layered corner of central Madrid, a tight grid of narrow streets where the cooking comes from everywhere at once. The rooms are small, the prices are honest, and the good ones fill with regulars rather than reservations. Museo Reina Sofía and CaixaForum Madrid sit uphill from it, El Rastro at the bottom.
