Background

About Diurno

The Story

Diurno spent 15 years as one of Madrid's bigger video stores before becoming a café, restaurant and bar. It still leans into that film-and-music streak, and calls itself a meeting point for the Chueca neighbourhood, locals and visitors alike.

The Cuisine

The menu is Spanish at heart with cosmopolitan touches, made to share, reaching for good raw ingredients in more playful, sophisticated dishes. Cocktails and coffee round it out.

The Anniversary Menu and the Group

Diurno belongs to Grupo Mercado de la Reina, which also runs Museo Chicote, the Gin Club and the Mercado de la Reina restaurants, and it has been hosting events for more than two decades. Its current anniversary menu, €31.50 a head for two to eight people with drinks extra, shows the style: a first of truffled grilled leek, duck gyozas, a tropical corvina tiradito, avocado tempura with bonito tartare or Galician quesadillas with lacón and tetilla cheese, then miso-lacquered Iberian secreto, Iberian cheek cannelloni with shiitake and truffle, or rigatoni carbonara with Iberian guanciale. Sourdough bread and an aperitivo are €1.95, with a gluten-free option. Brunch runs Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 11:00 to 12:30.

Getting There

It's on Calle de San Marcos in Chueca (the Justicia barrio), near the Mercado de San Antón and the shoe shops of Calle Augusto Figueroa.

Nearby

Justicia is the quieter, better-dressed half of the Chueca side of town, all narrow streets and small shopfronts. Mercado de San Antón anchors the eating, and around it sit grill rooms, wine bars and places that fill late. It is central without ever feeling like the centre.
