Vinoteca Vides is Vicente Herrero's wine bar on Calle de la Libertad in Chueca, and it holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol. The list, which the house calls the Guía Vicentín, is entirely Spanish: about 125 wines from 72 denominations and 65 grape varieties, chosen from small, family projects rather than big commercial labels, with around 45 by the glass and weekly 'wines of the week' that open premium bottles for pouring at €3 to €12 a glass. Each glass comes with a small aperitivo, and the food runs to cheese and charcuterie boards, tortilla and Albacete touches such as pheasant in escabeche and lomo de orza.

Background

About Vinoteca Vides

The Story

Vinoteca Vides is, in its own words, an idea that had been brewing for years before it finally took shape: a small but ambitious project by Vicente Herrero, who decided to dedicate himself to what he really wanted to do. Herrero often builds the cheese boards himself. It holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol.

The Cuisine

Wine first, with tapas to go with it. The star is the mixed board of four cheeses or cured meats chosen by your tabernero, and the list runs through Spanish cheeses such as manchego, cabrales and idiazábal, ibérico ham, conservas like mussels, octopus and cockles, tortilla and boquerones en vinagre. Cheeses, conservas and wines rotate constantly, so not everything on the list is always available.

The Team

Vicente Herrero, who runs the bar and often puts the cheese boards together himself, with a team of waiters who know the list and are happy to recommend.

A wine bar where the move is to ask what to drink and let the staff steer you towards denominations beyond the usual ones. Tables go early, so arrive near opening time if you want to sit. It works well for a group working through the list glass by glass.
