El Bierzo has served menús on Calle de Barbieri in Chueca since 1971, and owner-cook Miguel González, cooking since he was 17, was still at the stove at 84 in 2025. The daily menu changes with what the fishmonger, greengrocer and butcher offer, with more than twenty choices: acelgas al ajoarriero, riñones al jerez, hígado encebollado, pisto with pumpkin and fried egg, fried fish and stews. It holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol, a 'Solete con Solera' for long-running classics.

Background

About El Bierzo

The Story

El Bierzo opened in 1971 and has been serving menús in Chueca ever since; it celebrated 50 years in 2021. Its owner and cook, Miguel González, began cooking at 17 and for years also cooked for the Wagon-Lits night trains; at 84, in 2025, he was still planning each day's menu around what the market brings. The guest book holds names such as the novelist Juan Marsé, the politician Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba and former culture minister César Antonio Molina. It holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol.

The Cuisine

Home cooking from the unfashionable end of the Spanish repertoire, served as a menú del día with first and second courses, bread, a drink and dessert. The most-requested dishes are acelgas al ajoarriero, riñones al jerez and hígado encebollado.

The Menú

Starters include artichokes with ham, the house pisto with pumpkin and fried eggs, a fry-up of chipirones, squid and boquerones, tortilla a la paisana to share, the legume of the day, consommé with egg yolk or sherry, sautéed chard, cabbage or red cabbage, guisantes con jamón, mushrooms al ajillo and ensaladilla. Mains run from veal fillet with chips, liver encebollado and kidneys al jerez to hake, whiting or John Dory grilled or battered, lamb chops, swordfish, chicken in almond sauce and eggs with Burgos morcilla. Desserts are flan, natillas, cuajada, apple compote or ice cream. To drink there's Bierzo wine, red or white, and Toro, Ribera or Rioja crianza. In 2025 the menu cost €16 or €18.50 depending on the dishes chosen, and it can be taken away if you collect it.

Experience

El Bierzo Dining Experience

A lively, unpretentious dining room that fills at lunchtime with regulars eating simple, honest food, and a guest book signed by writers and ministers. The house calls itself an oasis among the poké and ceviche places that have filled the street, and a chat with Miguel is part of the appeal.
