Café Comercial is the historic café-restaurant on Glorieta de Bilbao, founded in 1887 and once a meeting place for Madrid's writers and artists, including Antonio Machado. It closed in the summer of 2015 and reopened in March 2017 under Grupo El Escondite, keeping its period bar, floors and mirrors. Today it runs separate bar and restaurant cartas of castizo Madrid cooking, with cocido on Thursdays, rice on Wednesdays and a weekend brunch.

Background

About Café Comercial

The Story

Café Comercial opened in 1887 on Glorieta de Bilbao and became a fixture for Madrid's writers and artists, Antonio Machado among them. It closed by surprise in the summer of 2015, after 128 years. Grupo El Escondite took it on, and after a careful restoration it reopened on 27 March 2017, its 130th year, with the original character kept: the long bar, period flooring and old mirrors. Pepe Roch came in as executive chef and gastronomic partner at the reopening, and chef Carlos Moreno has run the kitchen since the renovation; the house credits the pair with a carta built around a return to castizo flavours and Madrid produce.

The Cuisine

Castizo Madrid cooking with light international touches: callos, croquetas, ensaladilla and Thursday cocido alongside classics kept 'since 1887' such as solomillo Wellington, Rossini and a British cottage pie, plus rices, grills and a weekend brunch.

Bar and Restaurant Cartas

There are two cartas. The bar list covers Ibérico ham, an international cheese board, French oysters, gildas, stuffed eggs, smoked and pickled sardine on raf tomato, salmorejo and griddled pig's ear with brava sauce. The restaurant carta, updated in August 2026, starts with Ibérico croquetas, the 'El Comercial' ensaladilla, tiger mussels, bravas with arbutus-berry alioli and battered hook-caught squid, and runs through salads and two rices made with DO Valencia Albufera rice. A 'Classics since 1887' section holds callos a la madrileña, squid in its ink with white rice, prawn cocktail, cottage pie, solomillo Rossini with Port and solomillo Wellington, with grilled Simmental lomo bajo, oxtail cannelloni, bacalao confit on pisto and a torrija on rice pudding among the rest. There's a 10% supplement on the terrace.

Days of the Week and Events

The week has its rituals: rice on Wednesdays, cocido on Thursdays and brunch on Saturday and Sunday, with separate menus for breakfasts and meriendas, cocktails, wine and group dining. The ground floor is the big, castizo café room; upstairs, the first floor is more intimate, with its own bar, a private salon and a stage. The café also publishes a cultural agenda on its website and hosts private and corporate events.

Getting There

On Glorieta de Bilbao in Malasaña, Café Comercial has kept its original bar, period flooring and vintage mirrors since opening in 1887.

Nearby

Malasaña is where the city keeps its energy, a tight web of streets that turns over fast and stays up late. The eating is young and restless, with vegan kitchens, coffee bars and creative rooms wedged between places that have not changed in decades. It runs down to Gran Vía, and it rewards walking without a plan.
