Background

About Irati Taverna Basca

The Story

Irati Taverna Basca opened in 1994, founded by brothers Inaki and Mikel Lopez de Vinaspre from Vitoria in the Basque Country. Inaki arrived in Barcelona in the early 1980s to study anthropology and noticed the city had almost no authentic Basque cuisine. Irati pioneered the introduction of the San Sebastian-style pintxo donostiarra to Barcelona and became the seed of the entire Grupo Sagardi gastronomic project, which now operates 35+ restaurants across Spain, UK, Argentina, Portugal, Mexico, and the Netherlands. Named after the Irati Forest, an ancient beech forest in Navarra.

The Cuisine

Executive chef Jose Luis Ungidos leads the kitchen. The dual format offers a stand-up pintxo bar (around 2.50-2.80 EUR per piece) and a dining room with Basque grill dishes using holm oak charcoal. Signature txuleton de vaca vieja (6+ years, 8 EUR/100g), bacalao frito de sidreria (24 EUR), and marmitako de atun rojo (24 EUR). Tasting Menu Sidreria at 64 EUR per person (min 2). Around 45 EUR per person without drinks.

The Team

Executive chef Jose Luis Ungidos leads the kitchen under Grupo Sagardi, founded by brothers Inaki and Mikel Lopez de Vinaspre.
