Background
About 1881 per Sagardi
The Story
1881 per Sagardi occupies the fourth floor of the Palau de Mar, the former General Trade Warehouses whose construction began in 1881 in the British port style. The building today houses the Museum of the History of Catalonia (Museu d'Història de Catalunya), and Sagardi Group has turned its top floor into a port-facing restaurant and terrace. The name 1881 refers to the year the warehouses were built, not the year the restaurant opened.
The Cuisine
The kitchen focuses on Mediterranean and Catalan classics: freshly prepared rice dishes, seafood and fish from the Barceloneta fish market, and meats cooked over the oak wood-fired Basque grill. Signature items include txuleton matured beef, grilled octopus with seasonal vegetables, pochas with red tuna, and creamy rice with Barceloneta red shrimp. All beef is matured and grass-fed; vegetables are sourced from the group's own gardens.
The Team
The restaurant is part of Sagardi Group, founded in Barcelona in 1994 by Iñaki and Mikel López de Viñaspre. The group today operates more than 30 establishments across 15 brands, built around Basque cider-house cooking and the culture of the open grill. 1881 per Sagardi extends that model to a Mediterranean, port-facing setting, with a companion rooftop cocktail bar called Terrassa de les Indianes.
