Barceloneta Beach

Barceloneta Beach is one of Barcelona's oldest and most popular beaches, fronting the 18th-century La Barceloneta neighbourhood that was built for residents displaced by the construction of the Ciutadella fortress. For most of its history the area was an industrial waterfront cut off from the sea, including the Somorrostro shantytown that stood here until the late 1960s. The beach was transformed for the 1992 Summer Olympics, when the coastline was cleaned up and sand brought in to create the modern stretch enjoyed today.
