Can Sole is a traditional Catalan seafood restaurant on Carrer de Sant Carles in La Barceloneta, the old fishermen's quarter of Barcelona. Founded in 1903, it has been run by the same family for four generations and is one of the city's longest-running restaurants.

Background

About Can Sole

The Story

Can Sole opened its doors in 1903, when it began as a simple eating house feeding the fishermen of the Barceloneta port. More than a century later it has grown into one of Barcelona's most emblematic restaurants, still run by the same family four generations on. The dining room is lined with photographs, drawings and signed notes left by the writers, painters, singers and actors who have eaten here over the decades - Joan Miro, Santiago Rusinol, Josep Pla, Manuel Vazquez Montalban and Joan Manuel Serrat among them.

The Cuisine

The kitchen stays close to traditional Catalan cocina marinera, built around the day's fish and shellfish from the Barcelona coast. Rices and fideuas are the house signature - arros caldos amb llamantol, arros a banda, black rice with cuttlefish and the zarzuela fish stew appear again and again on regulars' tables. Starters lean on Iberico ham, anchovies, clams a la marinera and local prawns. Prices for mains sit roughly in the upscale range; a full meal with wine lands around the higher end of the bracket.

The Team

Can Sole is still owned and run by descendants of the founding Sole family. Service is formal in the traditional Catalan sense - long-serving waiters in jacket and tie who know the menu by heart and advise on the day's catch.

A classic, old-school Catalan seafood dining room: white tablecloths, formal service, and walls covered in signed photographs of the painters, writers and musicians who have eaten here since 1903. Unhurried and timeless rather than trendy.
