Quarter
El Born
El Born is the heart of La Ribera, a medieval district in Barcelona's old town that grew into the city's main commercial hub from the 13th century. Its centrepiece is the church of Santa Maria del Mar, a celebrated example of Catalan Gothic architecture, while the Passeig del Born takes its name from the medieval tournaments once held there. The area was heavily damaged after defeat in the War of the Spanish Succession in 1714, commemorated by the eternal flame at the Fossar de les Moreres.
