Background

About Bodega La Puntual

The Story

Bodega La Puntual occupies a historic 1872 coffee roaster building on Carrer de Montcada in El Born. It is a partnership between Grupo Varela -- the Barcelona hospitality group founded by Manuel Varela and Maite Gago and now led by their son Jose Manuel Varela -- and the Ninou family, long-time Born residents and heirs to the legendary cava bar El Xampanyet next door. The restaurant's name references Santiago Rusinol's literary work L'Auca del Senyor Esteve, reflecting Barcelona's tradition of hospitality.

The Cuisine

The kitchen serves traditional Catalan bodega cuisine with an emphasis on quality products and sharing plates. Dishes include mortadella with truffles, cured ham boards, tuna tartare, anchovies on ice, capipota with chickpeas, trinxat with fried egg, rice with morcilla, seasonal calcots, patatas bravas, and croquetas. The entrance bar serves oysters and wine. Vermouth service is a speciality.

The Team

Jose Manuel Varela leads Grupo Varela, taking over the family business in 2004 from his parents Manuel Varela and Maite Gago. Executive chef Carlos Allue heads the group's kitchens. Co-owner Joan Carles Ninou brings the Born neighbourhood heritage of the Ninou family, connected to El Xampanyet.
