Bar Electricitat is a 1908 vermouth bodega at the edge of the Barceloneta market, still pouring house-made vermut from the tap into short glasses. The room keeps its original wooden wine vats, marble-topped bar and modernist wrought-iron doors features that earned it a spot on the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia register.

Background

About Bar Electricitat

The Story

Bar Electricitat has been pouring wine and vermouth on Carrer de Sant Carles since 1908, taking its name from a generator once housed in the building that supplied electricity to the surrounding streets of La Barceloneta. Little has changed inside: the wine vats, ice fridge and marble-topped wooden bar have all been there since the bodega opened. The venue is listed in the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia, a recognition anchored by its original modernist wrought-iron doors.

The Cuisine

The kitchen sticks to classic Barceloneta tapas built for vermouth and barrel wine. House-made vermut comes straight from the tap, while plates run to the bomba de la Barceloneta (a deep-fried ball of meat and potato with brava sauce and aioli), thick tortilla, ensaladilla rusa with crab, croquetas, boquerones, pulpo a feira, and a parade of tinned seafood, anchovies, mussels, clams, served on marble tables alongside pan amb tomàquet and cured jamón. In 2024 the bar's bomba was featured in the Ruta de la Bomba competition.

The Team

The bodega has been family-run since 2006, when Victoria Jaén and Agapito Soler took it over. In 2020 their children Daniel and Judith Soler stepped up to lead day-to-day operations alongside son-in-law Toni Pérez. Long-serving regulars behind the bar, Sarai and Javier Ortega, have been pouring for more than seventeen years.

Experience

Bar Electricitat Dining Experience

A tiny, unpretentious Barceloneta bodega with original modernist wrought-iron doors, wooden wine vats mounted on the wall, and a marble-topped bar that hasn't been replaced since 1908. The room gets loud and shoulder-to-shoulder at vermut hour; regulars and market workers mix with neighbours pulling up stools along the bar.
